How to choose a good corn variety?

Feb 24 , 2022

Spring plowing is coming soon, how to choose good corn varieties? Many farmers are over-pursuing great varieties. For example, in the southwest spring corn area, farmers are particularly fond of great maize varieties. But in fact, the choice of corn varieties needs to consider multiple dimensions. The size of the cob is one aspect of judging the high yield of a variety, but the yield of a single mu depends on the planting density, the seed yield of the ear, the depth of the grain, the thickness of the cob and the water content of the grain, etc., so the size of the bar cannot be the only and objective Selection criteria.

1. Tips for selecting corn seeds: insurance, stress resistance, food and feed

There are four indicators for weighing seed quality in my country: seed purity, seed purity, germination rate and moisture. The minimum requirement for the purity of the first-grade seed is 98%, the minimum requirement for purity is 98%, the minimum requirement for germination rate is 85%, and the moisture content is not higher than 13%. Each index has strict and clear standards.

In addition, the choice of corn varieties must pay attention to "strategies." First, it is recommended to choose "insurance" species and carefully select "novel" species to reduce planting risks. The so-called "insurance" seed is to plant seeds that have performed well for at least two years locally. The so-called "novel" species are those that have not been tested and demonstrated locally;

2. Choose varieties with good stress resistance. Stress resistance mainly refers to the disease resistance, lodging resistance, drought resistance, insect resistance, barren tolerance, etc. Light or non-injured varieties, this type of variety generally has good yield stability;

3. It is recommended to choose varieties for both grain and feed. At present, domestic corn consumption is showing an obvious rigid growth trend. The consumption structure is gradually changing from the past ration consumption to a multi-domain compound consumption structure dominated by feed and industrial processing. It is expected that food and seeds The consumption of corn for corn will stabilize in the future, while the demand for corn silage, especially for both grain and feed, will increase steadily.

2. Reduce misunderstandings and plant scientifically

After the visit, it was discovered that corn planting methods in many areas of my country need to be improved, and some wrong traditional practices can even lead to serious consequences of reduced corn production. The following common misunderstandings about corn planting, do you know their harm?

1. Nitrogen fertilizer and phosphate fertilizer are more important? ❌

Some farmers have the habit of "heavy nitrogen and phosphorus but light potash" in fertilization. In fact, the three fertilizers of potassium, nitrogen and phosphorus are the three fertilizers with the largest demand in the life of corn, and they are indispensable. Especially if there is a lack of potassium fertilizer during the growth of corn, it will result in plant disease resistance, poor lodging resistance, increased ear deformity rate and other consequences, resulting in reduced yield.

There is also an incorrect fertilization practice, that is, the amount of fertilization is not in harmony with the planting density. For example, in the northwest spring corn area, the variety density is generally above 5,000 plants/mu. Most of this area is sandy land, and it is necessary to pay attention to small meals many times when using fertilizer in sandy land. If the planting density is increased, the amount of fertilizer should also be appropriately increased.

2. Like to break off the corn tillers? ❌

Under normal circumstances, the same fertility, the lower the density, the higher the probability of tillering corn; the same density, the better the fertility, the higher the probability of tillering. The main reason for the occurrence of tillering is the good soil strength, so there is no need to break it off. After breaking off, it will damage the roots and increase the probability of pests and diseases.

3. Harvest the corn before it is fully mature? ❌

When the corn is fully mature, there will be two signs, one is the disappearance of the milk line, and the other is the appearance of a black powder layer. Farmers harvest in advance, which generally results in an average loss of about 100 jin per mu. For example, in the Huanghuaihai summer corn area, the harvesting habits of farmers are generally early.
